Thanks for sharing this. Back in college, we read Sir Gawain and were told of The Pearl, but never read or discussed it. It feels particularly meaningful right now.
I have been enjoying your essays and sharing with my husband and adult sons, one of whom had a conversion experience last year. He’s a linguist and it’s learning Biblical Greek so he can read the New Testament in the original. He’s a pretty serious character. :-)

I wrote the essay in 2015, and I obviously heard the message, but I don't think I actually understood it until it was published in the Medieval Issue in the Fall of 2020 when Delta was hitting and death was all around us.
